What you may not know is that many of the best known voices you’ll hear on TV also contributed to a song made in the Cotswolds - ‘Let’s Hear It England (feat. Commentators United)’ by The DC Klub. Commentators like Guy Mowbray and Steve Wilson from the BBC, Peter Drury and Rob Hawthorne from Sky, Martin Tyler, Clive Tyldesley, Ian Darke and Jon Champion.
Every four years, England hopes to relive the glories of 1966. Yet dreams come and go in a trice. Familiar disappointments against a familiar soundtrack. Ever fancy a change from anthems like ‘Three Lions’ or ‘Sweet Caroline’? Even today, they’re much loved and still the go-to songs for radio airplay.
There’s no doubt British football songs can have a ‘Marmite effect’. Our unique ‘British-ness’ is also surely part of their cultural appeal. No one should feel embarrassed to like them. They’re not written to be judged against bands like Coldplay or Queen, or musical masterpieces by Beethoven or Rachmaninov. They’re written to raise a smile, add fun and a sense of camaraderie to fans desperate to see their team succeed.
Ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, I was a TV commentator myself, working on the Premier League and major FIFA and UEFA tournaments. At the same time, I love music and I’d just joined the Cotswold Male Voice Choir. It occurred to me the choir would sound like the fans (in tune too!) and my commentator colleagues could paint a verbal picture of England winning the World Cup… on penalties! Perfect!
To support charity, the song was published by The Prince’s Trust (now The King’s Trust), who received welcome publicity on ‘Sky News’ and ITV’s ‘News at Ten’, but even an ‘ear worm’ was never going to catch without regular airplay! Frustratingly, radio only ever seemed to play ‘Three Lions’.
For 2018, we tried again and I wanted to help inspire local young people, so we partnered with the University of Gloucestershire and Dean Close School in Cheltenham. The song was remade, while the video included rarely seen archive footage of Sir Alf Ramsey, Bobby Moore and the 1966 team enjoying our country’s finest football hour. I often thought it would also be fun for fans and celebs to join in and pop up unexpectedly in the video singing the ‘Oh Ay Oh Ay Ohs’. (Now there’s an idea for those of you on TikTok!) .
